Beyond the grades and placements, life at an IIT is a unique experience. Here is an honest look at academics, social life, clubs and mental health.
Getting into an IIT is a dream for millions of Indian students. But what is campus life actually like once you get there?
Academics Are Intense — But Manageable
The curriculum is rigorous, but professors are generally accessible. The peer group is exceptional, and collaborative learning is encouraged. CPI (Cumulative Performance Index) matters for branch changes and further education, but industry often cares more about projects and internships.
The Club Culture
IITs have hundreds of clubs — from robotics and coding to dance, drama and music. Techfests and culturals (like Mood Indigo at IIT Bombay or Shaastra at IIT Madras) are massive events that attract national and international participation.
The Placement Season
November to January is placement season. Companies like Google, Microsoft, Goldman Sachs, McKinsey and Amazon visit campus. The pressure is real, but most students find good opportunities.
Mental Health
The competitive environment can be stressful. Most IITs now have counselling centres and student wellness programs. It is important to seek help if needed — there is no shame in it.
The Network
The alumni network of any IIT is priceless. From startup funding to job referrals, the IIT tag opens doors throughout your career.
